The Newman Kitchen

The following images are not meant to be exact. The actual cabinet wood
color and door style will be different. The images are for general design
appearance only. Some cabinet detail may also be different from what is
generated by the computer.

See Kitchen plan II here

Top view
This is a top view of the kitchen so that you can see the shape of the counter top.
I did not locate a closet pantry in this plan. I was worried that you might not have
enough counter space if one was located near the chimney. If a pantry is
required, you may build one to the left of the chimney or next to the french door.

Sink view
This view shows the sink, dishwasher, and cooktop. There is ample room for
cleanup and the corner base cabinet has been angled to allow for easier use
of the corner. People tend not to work in a corner due to the 90 degree counter
hitting the hips. With a wider 45 degree corner, the hips don't hit the counter
and working there feels more natural. A working drawer and roll out shelves can be
inside the corner cabinet. Note the two counter levels. The lower section can be used
as a bake center. Optional clear front drawers could be used to show off the bake center.

Bake center
This view shows more of the bake center. There is a small appliance garage located
under the open book case. Two different colored counter tops are used to accentuate
the area. The corner base cabinet has two half circle lazy susans. Note the optional
wood hood above the cooktop. There are many hood styles to choose from.
Instead of a wood hood a wall cabinet and traditional hood could be used,
but the ends of an exposed metal hood might not be as attractive as the wood
option.

Island
I suggest the use of an "old world" style butcher block island. The legs might be
thick turned legs and the skirt under the top might have a drawer for storage.
This type of an island would be heavy, but not impossible to move. An
island on casters may be another option, but may not fit with the style of the home.

Another view of island
This view gives you a better idea of the space. The refrigerator located near
the table avoids many traffic problems. The oven could be located to the left
of the refrigerator, but I thought this arrangement looked better.

Shaker inset style cabinets
You had asked for the Shaker style - I would recommend the Shaker door
inset into the cabinet frame as shown above. Inset does cost more than a regular
door mounted on top of the frame, but inset dramatically adds to the look of the kitchen.
If you prefer a door mounted on top of the frame, please let me know.
